Fire Prevention Week - October 3 - 9, 2010
“Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With!”
“Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With!” is NFPA’s official theme for Fire Prevention Week (FPW), October 3-9. If you’re wondering why NFPA, the official sponsor of FPW for nearly 90 years, is focusing on smoke alarms when most homes already have at least one, you've come to the right place!
This year's campaign is designed to educate people about the importance of smoke alarms and encourages everyone to take the steps necessary to update and maintain their home smoke alarm protection.
- Smoke alarms save lives. But you need to make sure they are working. Download Sparky's smoke alarm safety sheet (PDF, 904 KB) and hang it on your refrigerator or some other handy spot. It will help remind you to test your smoke alarms every month.
- Pictorials are a fun reminder to kids about the importance of working smoke alarms and having a home escape plan. Print out the boy (PDF, 874 KB) and girl (PDF, 862 KB) pictorials and hang on the fridge - you can even laminate and make into a placemat!
- You and your family should develop and practice a home fire escape plan. Download our escape plan grid (PDF, 648 KB) and practice your escape at least twice a year!
Commemorating a conflagration
Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871.
According to popular legend, the fire broke out after a cow - belonging to Mrs. Catherine O'Leary - kicked over a lamp, setting first the barn, then the whole city on fire. Chances are you've heard some version of this story yourself; people have been blaming the Great Chicago Fire on the cow and Mrs. O'Leary, for more than 130 years. But recent research by Chicago historian Robert Cromie has helped to debunk this version of events.
